Did you watch Alex Honnold (the Free Solo guy) climb Taipei 101… like, the actual skyscraper… without ropes or a harness, and it was broadcast live on Netflix as part of this event called Skyscraper Live.
Taipei 101 is over 1,600 feet tall, so watching him casually hang off a building that high had people completely freaking out over the weekend.
It took him about an hour and a half, and the hardest part wasn’t even one big dramatic move... it was the exhausting middle stretch where he just had to keep going and going.
What’s wild is this was his first major urban free solo climb, and it sparked a lot of debate like, is it inspiring or totally irresponsible to televise something that dangerous in real time?
And apparently there was like a 10-second-delay just in case...
People in Taiwan were cheering him on, but a lot of climbers and viewers were also like…should Netflix really be turning a potential life-or-death stunt into entertainment?
Either way, Honnold made history as the first person to summit Taipei 101 completely unaided, and it’s one of those things that makes your palms sweat just thinking about it.
