If you have found yourself staying up way later than you originally planned on staying up... then you may be guilty of R.B.P. And it's OK if you are, you're certainly NOT alone!
I, too, am guilty of revenge bedtime procrastination.
I think my being a mom of twins is why I am SO bad about this! I never have time to myself, so after the kids are asleep, I get this burst of energy even though I’m exhausted. I should go to bed because it’s 9pm and I have to be up at 5 a.m. for work, but I’m not ready for rest. Some part of me is unsatisfied and I find myself staying up late doing NOTHING or binging a new show!
But this isn't a phenomenon just for parents. Since the pandemic started, a lot of people have been experiencing this - parenthood or not. It’s a phrase popularized by millennials and Gen Z... which literally translates to “sleepless night revenge."
Basically what happens is people will refuse to sleep because they don’t have much control over their daytime life, so they will stay up very late into the night, even if they’re super tired! We are doing this because we just don’t want that free time to end at night. To be honest, it’s deeply validating to learn that this habit has a name, and that I am not alone in doing it.
The term “bedtime revenge procrastination” has spread on social media with thousands of Tik Toks and millions of “Likes”... it’s like a little collective sigh of relief.
What are you usually doing with your "free time" when you stay up late? I just watched an entire miniseries in one night. And I'm not even mad about it! That was my only time I could have watched that show... so should I really feel guilty??
