Study Finds California Roads Rank Second Worst in the Nation

Wait, was that a pothole? Study says it probably was.

According to a study from Copilot, the Golden State's roads are among the worst in the country. Major cities in California including Los Angeles have the roughest roads. Sacramento has the 11th worst roads in the nation, San Diego 8th, Los Angeles + Long Beach and Anaheim all tied for 3rd, San Jose ranked 3rd and finally Oakland and San Francisco tied for 1st place!

The study by Copilot found that 46.2% of California roads are considered "poor condition." Nearly half of the state's roads are not up to par! The study found that the national average for most states is 26.4% of their roads are in poor condition.

According to the Copilot study, here is a breakdown of California's roads:

  • There are 3 miles of road per 1,000 people.
  • 22.5 daily vehicle miles per capita.
  • 46.2% of major roads are in poor condition.
  • 53.3% of minor arterials are in poor condition.
  • 8% of Interstates and freeways are in poor condition.
  • 50.8% of Arterials and interchanges are in poor condition.
