Purina Dog Food Has Issued A Recall On Certain Dog Food Over Toxicity Risk

Dog owners check your dog food right now if they require a special dog food due to food sensitivities.

“We apologize to pet owners and veterinarians for any concerns or inconvenience this situation has caused,” said Purina. “As pet experts and pet owners ourselves, the health and well-being of pets is our top priority.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled certain Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental prescription dry dog food because it could make your pets sick. This recall was issued once 2 dogs showed signs of vitamin D toxicity after they ate the dog food and once they got off the special dog food, they recovered from the issue. Now even though vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, consuming elevated levels could cause health issues for the dog such as "vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction."

  • Below is the specific items of the Purina dog food being recalled:
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) 8lb and 10lb bags
    • UPC Code: 38100 19190 (8lbs) and 38100 19192 (20lbs)
