FDA Approves First COVID-19 Breath Test

According to KTLA 5, the Food and Drug Administration announced last week that they have authorized the first test that can detect COVID-19 through breath for emergency use.

The FDA said that the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer will be able to identify five volatile organic compounds linked to COVID-19 in less than three minutes from a person's breath. As of right now the test has a 99.3 percent specificity rate, which measures the correctly identified negatives tests, and a 91.2 percent sensitivity rate, which measures the correct positive tests.

The breathalyzer is about the size of a piece of carry-on luggage and can be used at mobile testing sites, hospitals, and doctor's offices.
