Landon Donovan Talks Taking A Stand Against Homophobia And Racism In Soccer

This is the kind of thing we need more of in sports. We all know Landon Donovan, local soccer legend. He was born in Ontario, raised in Redlands, and played for the LA Galaxy forever. Landon's currently manager and co-owner of the San Diego Loyal in the United Soccer League.

Recently, San Diego was playing the Phoenix Rising, and one of the Phoenix players apparently used a homophobic slur against San Diego player Collin Martin, who is openly gay. Martin reacted and was given a red card by the ref, which ejected him from the game. Donovan told the ref what happened…and when the ref wouldn’t remove the Phoenix player from the game…Landon took his team off the field. It was the middle of the match, his team was up 3-1, but they walked off and forfeited.

The Phoenix player denies making the comment.

Donovan explained that since one of his players had been racially abused in a game just a week ago...they weren't going to stand for any kind of insensitive comments or actions on the field going forward. Listen to his check-in with Ryan Seacrest below.
