The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced this morning with HBO's "Game of Thrones" coming out on top with 22 nominations.
Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" was nominated once again for Outstanding Drama Series along with Netflix's "The Crown," "Stranger Things," NBC's "This is Us" HBO's "Westworld" and FX's "The Americans." "Game of Thrones" won outstanding drama in 2015 and 2016 but wasn't nominated in 2017 because the only new episodes of the series aired during the eligibility period considered for the 2016 nominations.
A series from the Big Four major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox) has not won an outstanding drama series since Fox's "24" in 2006.
HBO saw several of its primetime Sunday night shows get an Emmy nod, including; "Westworld," "Veep," "Barry" "Silicon Valley" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Netflix's "Glow" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" were also among the shows being considered for awards. The premium cable channel had been the most nominated network for the last 17 straight years, but Netflix broke their streak this year with an impressive 112 nominations.
Hosted by Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost and Michael Che, the 70th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented on Sept 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. (EST) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
