Head over to Olivia's Bookshelf in Pasadena because there you will find "fiction-themed merchandise and stacks of novels celebrating authors who are Black, indigenous or people of color."
"A month where we celebrate Black authors and activists and politicians, and to think that in some small way I am contributing to that celebration by being the first Black woman to open a bookstore in Pasadena - it means so much to me," she said.
Nikki High is the owner of Olivia's and said that she always had trouble finding Black characters and authors to relate to when she was growing up so she wanted to do something to change this situation. High found her love of reading at a young age and really fell in love with a particular Sci-Fi author, Octavia Butler, who "wrote dystopian stories with themes like black injustice and women's rights." Which then leads us to High naming her bookstore Octavia's Bookshelf, which opens on February 18th during Black History Month. Click here for more.
