The California State University (CSU) system has announced it plans to cancel all in-person classes for the fall. CSU Chancellor Timothy White made the announcement Tuesday (05/12), affecting all 23 CSU campuses.
All courses will continue online to accommodate safety regulations surrounding coronavirus.
White announced that some limited exceptions be made to allow for in-person activity. “Our university, when open without restrictions and fully in person … is a place where over 500,000 people come together in close and vibrant proximity,” White said at a meeting of Cal State’s Board of Trustees. “That approach sadly just isn’t in the cards now.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, White said his decision resulted from a confluence of issues around COVID-19, including the health and safety of students, faculty and staff, as well as significant financial constraints.
The LA Times adds that the Cal State system is projected to lose $337 million for the spring term alone as a result of the pandemic. That includes loss of revenue from student housing, parking and campus bookstores.
