I Spoke At My Alma Mater Los Alamitos High School’s 50th Anniversary

I was asked back to my high school to speak at Los Alamitos High School’s 50th Anniversary.

I was honored and touched…

Here is my speech below:

FIRST OF ALL I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO LOS AL FOR HAVING ME BACK TO CELEBRATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY…. I AM HONORED! USUALLY WHEN I GET ASKED BACK SOMEWHERE IT’S BECAUSE I LEFT MY PURSE OR FORGOT TO PAY MY CHECK….

HI.. MY NAME IS TANYA RAD & I GRADUATED FROM LOS AL IN 2005 (WOOP WOOP). I’M CURRENTLY A MEMBER OF TEAM ON AIR WITH RYAN SEACREST ON 102.7KIISM & THIS IS A DREAM I HAD WHEN I WAS WALKING THE HALLS OF THIS EXACT HIGH SCHOOL.

I’M HERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR PASSIONS…

THEY ARE NOT RANDOM…

THEY ARE NOT FAR-FETCHED…..

THEY ARE YOUR PURPOSE.

I DISCOVERED MY LOVE FOR MUSIC EARLY ON IN LIFE & I WANTED TO BRING THAT PASSION TO LIFE IN MY HIGH SCHOOL… WITH THE HELP OF MY SPANISH TEACHER (SHOUTOUT TO MR. MARTINEZ WHO STILL TEACHERS HERE BTW) I STARTED A MUSICAL SYNERGY CLUB.

WAS IT WEIRD? YES. WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE LIKE IT? NO! WERE THERE A LOT OF MEMBERS? NO. BUT WAS I DOING SOMETHING I LOVED & FELT EXTREMELY PASSIONATE ABOUT? YES!

MR. MARTINEZ TAUGHT ME THAT IT’S OKAY TO STEP OUT OF THE BOX. IT’S OKAY IF THE THING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR CLASS. HE HELPED ME ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YES, I WAS DIFFERENT, BUT DIFFERENT WASN’T BAD.

DIFFERENT MADE ME STAND OUT. DIFFERENT MADE ME CONFIDENT. AND IT WAS MR. MARTINEZ THAT HELPED ME REDEFINE DIFFERENT & FEEL COMFORTABLE IN MY UNIQUENESS.

I DON'T THINK MR. MARTINEZ WILL EVER KNOW JUST HOW MUCH HE IMPACTED MY LIFE.. BUT SAYING THANK YOU DOESN’T EVEN DO HIM JUSTICE.

**SIDE NOTE: IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY KNOWLEDGE RECENTLY THIS CLUB DOESN’T EXIST ANYMORE, SO LET’S GET THAT BAD BOY BACK SHALL WE!?

THE TEACHERS AT LOS AL ARE TRULY LIKE NO OTHER. THEY CARE SO MUCH…

I’LL NEVER FORGET ON MY FIRST DAY OF MR. PAZEIAN HISTORY CLASS. I REMEMBER SITTING THERE THINKING, I AM GOING TO FAIL THIS CLASS. I’M NOT GOING TO GRADUATE WITH MY FRIENDS. MY LIFE IS OVER.

*I’M NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING, HIS CLASS WAS THE HARDEST THING IN AMERICA.

BUT I WAS DETERMINED TO NOT ONLY PASS THE CLASS, I WANTED AN ‘A’. JUST TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT I WAS MORE CAPABLE THAN I GAVE MYSELF CREDIT FOR.

MR. PAZEIAN STUCK BY MY SIDE THE ENTIRE SEMESTER. HE WORKED WITH ME AFTER CLASS… HE WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP ENCOURAGE & PUSH ME.

STILL TO THIS DAY I LOOK FOR THE MR. PAZEIAN’S & MR. MARTINEZ’ IN MY EVERY DAY LIFE. THE SPECIAL PEOPLE THAT WANT TO HELP YOU PURSUE YOUR DREAMS & ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS….

THE PEOPLE THAT EXTEND THEIR HAND TO YOU..

THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THAT EXTRA PHONE CALL TO MAKE A CONNECTION FOR YOU…

THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CONSTANTLY ENCOURAGING YOU TO KEEP PUSHING FORWARD….

AND THIS HIGH SCOOL IS FILLED WITH THEM!

BOTTOM LINE MY EXPERIENCE AT LOS AL TAUGHT ME …

TO BE BOLD ENOUGH TO LIVE LIFE ON YOUR TERMS

GO AGAINST THE GRAIN,

TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED.

LEAP BEFORE YOU LOOK.

HOLD ONTO THOSE SPECIAL PEOPLE

DANCE AS THOUGH EVERYBODY IS WATCHING.

MARCH TO THE BEAT OF YOUR OWN DRUM

AND STUBBORNLY REFUSE TO FIT IN

…AND REMEMBER FELLOW GRIFFINS … WHEREVER LIFE TAKES YOU… DON’T FORGET TO ROAR
