Well, I didn’t think we would all be mesmerized by the US shooting down a random spy balloon over the weekend, but there we were!
This Chinese spy balloon had been hovering over the U.S. throughout the week and President Biden teased. "We're going to take care of it." to reporters and Saturday it was shot down!
I think by now we’ve all seen the footage of the moment it was hit and started to plummet down to the ocean. Word is, the thing was hit with missiles over Surfside Beach in South Carolina. It looks like fighter jets were circling it prior to firing.
It happened around noon our time and it wasn't carrying passengers.
The fighter jet approaches the balloon, and then launches a projectile that strikes the aircraft and blows it up.
We now know that President Biden ordered the Pentagon to shoot it down as soon as possible – and actually gave the order on Wednesday. But they had to wait until it was above open waters.
China has condemned the downing of their air balloon, calling it an "excessive overreaction," while also expressing "strong dissatisfaction" for the move.
"Saturday Night Live" jumped on the Chinese spy balloon escapade...insinuating everyone made a way bigger deal of it that it actually was.
Trevor Noah also had a joke about it in his opening monologue at the Grammys.
Overreaction or not, you couldn’t get through a conversation this weekend without someone bringing it up.
