The Average Human Temperature Has Changed

UGANDA-DRCONGO-HEALTH-EBOLA-Uganda-DRCongo-health-Ebola

There are some things we have grown up knowing. Like, put on sunscreen before going swimming. Milk is good for your bones. Don't eat less than 30 minutes before you swim. Don't touch the fire. And the average temperature is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

But, uh, breaking news: the average human body temperature has changed. So everything we knew is now not exactly true.

Nearly 150 years ago, it was determined through a study of 25,000 patients that the average human temperature was 98.6 degrees. But now, more than a dozen MODERN DAY studies have proved that the number we once believed as fact as, in fact, too high!

Researchers from Stanford are now saying that the original study done 150 years ago was accurate at the time! But humans have since adapted and changed, and now our temperatures are a touch lower.

Today, it is believed that the average normal human-body temperature is closer to 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

YEP. The human body is getting COLDER.

If you're wondering why, let me try to explain.

Researchers found that the average body temperature of men and women born today is around 97.5 to 98.02 degrees Fahrenheit.... compared to those alive in the 1800s. The reason for the change is due to metabolic changes and overall changes to human physiology.

Julie Parsonnet, a senior author of the paper explaining the study, says “people are taller, fatter and live longer, and we don’t really understand why all those things have happened... Temperature is linked to all those things. The question is which is driving the others.”

Another factor for the temperature change may come from improved standards of living and sanitation overall, including improved dental hygiene and the creation of antibiotics.

So there you have it. The new average is 97.5. I guess that's just what we base our temperatures off of now!
