Those Water Wings Your Toddler Wears Can Be A Hazard

GERMANY-WEATHER

When you have little kids, of course you want to start teaching them things like learning how to swim when it's hot and you have the chance!

But there's something that sooo many parents are using to help their kids get used to the water that actually can be a hazard: water wings.

I know what you're thinking! "Those are supposed to be a safe thing that helps them float!!!"

And while that intended purpose does somewhat hold true for kids who are just learning how to get used to the water and figuring out how to float and swim, they shouldn't be relied on at all as a flotation device.

You're much better off using a life jacket, even if they aren't as comfortable or convenient as the water wings.

And experts are weighing in on the popular pool accessory.

Amy Artuso, senior program manager at The National Safety Council, says:

"Sadly, drowning is the leading cause of preventable death for children ages 1 through 4. It is also the second leading cause of preventable death for children ages 5 through 14, and the third leading cause of preventable death for children younger than age 1. Those in or around water should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket to be safe."

She certainly has a point. Using something that is U.S. Coast Guard-approved can give you as a parent much more peace of mind than slapping some air-filled plastic onto your kid's arms.

Another issue with the wings is that they can easily slip off, and then the kid is left with little to not flotation help at all.

I know for me, I have different kinds of flotation devices that we put the twins in, but of course we never just put them into the water and let them have it! We are always in the water with them, and probably will be for years to come!

Pool safety is so important, especially this time of year!
