Los Angeles Unified School District has announced it will offer – but not require – the COVID-19 vaccine for younger students ages 5 to 11.
This comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisor's approval and recommended Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for all children 5 to 11-years old.
The district currently has a vaccine mandate for students 12 and older, mirroring the statewide mandate throughout the state of California.
The federal Food and Drug Administration authorized emergency use of the vaccine for this age group last week saying the vaccine is “90.7% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children 5 through 11.”
Vaccines for that age group will become available starting November 8 and beginning November 16, LAUSD will have 13 school-based clinics offer the vaccine. On select Saturdays, the district will also offer school-based clinics.
