California will be transitioning to prioritizing age-based eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine. This will go into effect after seniors and essential workers receive their shots, California's Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Monday.
California's decision to move to age-based eligibility hopes to scale up much more quickly and get vaccines to impacted communities. The state's current vaccine plan prioritizes health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities are prioritized first, then those 65 and older, along with education and child care staff, emergency crews, and food and agriculture workers.
California did not release a break-down of the age groups that’ll be prioritized in future tiers.
Newsom also revealed the new pilot program - MyTurn, a website that lets Californians sign up to get notified when they’re eligible for the vaccine.
