Study Finds Angelenos Still Prefer Their Own Car to Public Transportation

A USC Dornsife / Union Bank survey found that the car remains the preferred method of transportation in L.A. County despite the growing public transit options.

Why? According to the LABarometer survey, drivers are dissuaded by a perceived lack of safety and convenience when it comes to the available public transportation options. they simply feel safer in their own car. Some find this result surprising, since according to LABarometer, car users are more vulnerable to accidents: 15% of residents were involved in an accident last year, most commonly while driving.

Additionally, the survey also notes that private vehicles are used at more than twice the rate of the second-most popular transportation mode, ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber.

LABarometer also notes that in general, L.A. residents who do consider public transportation felt slightly more secure on buses than on Metro trains. The behavior of other riders was the second-biggest concern for those who use Metro rail and the bus. Additionally, the survey found that the top concern for bus riders is long transit times. Then the top concern for train riders was a lack of nearby stops.

Of course as expected, the survey finds that cleanliness, convenience-related issues and safety getting to or waiting at stops were top-10 concerns for each system.
