Lin-Manuel Miranda's Long-Awaited 'In the Heights' Trailer Debuts

The first trailer for "In the Heights" is officially out and it is everything we ever wanted!

The trailer for the upcoming Warner Bros. and Lin-Manuel Miranda movie musical premiered on Thursday morning, introducing a colorful and vibrant New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights.

The movie stars heartthrob Anthony Ramos as Usnavi, described as a neighborhood bodega owner struggling as his block becomes more and more gentrified. Alongside Ramos, is Vida's Melissa Barrera as Vanessa.

At the beginning of the trailer, Ramos' character tells a few kids “It’s the story of a block that was disappearing, Un barrio called Washington Heights. The streets were made of music.”

"In the Heights" is a musical that tells the story of a largely Hispanic neighborhood in New York City. Joining Ramos and Barrera on-screen are Corey Hawkins, Jimmy Smits, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Dascha Polanco and Stephanie Beatriz. Miranda, who originated the role of Usnavi on stage, instead portrays Piraguero, the owner of a small piragua stand whose syrupy, icy treats rival that of Mister Softee.

The trailer introduces the story, also giving fans a glimpse of some of Miranda’s most popular songs, like the titular opening number Ramos raps throughout.

"In the Heights" was Miranda's first Broadway musical smash hit, picking up 13 Tony nominations and winning four, including best musical, after it opened in 2008.

Miranda, director Jon M. Chu and screenplay writer Quiara Alegría Hudes, who also wrote the book for the musical, had to make some adjustments to the story in 2019.

"In the Heights" opens in theaters in summer 2020.
