The viral chicken sandwich from Popeyes is officially sold out, the company announced today.

Many joined the Popeyes chicken sandwich craze, some waiting in hour-long lines just to get a taste of that southern recipe. Well, if you planned on going to grab yourself a bite of one, you're a little too late...for now.

Popeyes is officially sold out -- and they went to Twitter to celebrate the accomplishment, telling fans and consumers that it was all thanks to them.

The the chicken chain released a statement on Tuesday stating that "extraordinary demand" for the sandwich led the company to be sold out in just two weeks since its nationwide debut on August 12.

Popeyes projected inventory would last till the end of September but the craze, fueled by social media (specifically Twitter), caused them to completely sell out. INSANE!

See their official Twitter announcement below:

"As a result, Popeyes restaurants across the country are expected to sell out of the Chicken Sandwich by the end of this week," said the company in a statement and on social media. Many stores already have been without the product (as seen in the picture above -- many stores have been posting paper signs to let fans know that the sandwich was temporarily out of stock).

The craze for the Popeyes chicken sandwich was ignited on Twitter earlier this month, when the war (poll) for the "best chicken sandwich" was shared by an unknown Twitter user. Chick-fil-A, Wendy's and of course Popeyes were the 3 restaurants Twitter users argued had the best chicken sandwiches.

The demand for the Popeyes sandwich was so high that hour long lines were reported at some locations and even someone tried to sell the sandwich on eBay for $7,000. OKAY COME ON NOW!

Popeyes' sandwiches aren't gone forever. The company promised they will be back with more. The continued their statement with: "We, along with our suppliers, are working tirelessly to bring the new sandwich back to guests as soon as possible."

Popeyes also told fans dying for these sandwiches that if they wish to be notified when they return to stores should download the Popeyes app and "sign up for push notifications.".

Okay Popeyes...looks like you're currently winning this race!
