This week, L.A.U.S.D teachers and staff went on strike. Despite the rain, the strike happened.
Teachers and supporters were served a Los Angeles favorite - TACOS!
A fundraiser called "Tacos for Teachers" has been raising money to supply Los Angeles’ teachers with free lunch during the on-going United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) strike.
According to The Los Angeles Times, "Tacos for Teachers" was organized by the Democratic Socialists of America and the International Socialist Organization.
Taco trucks and street vendors are showing up to the strike locations and are providing food for the teachers.
The GoFundMe page for "Tacos For Teachers" has the following statement:
“Help support striking Los Angeles teachers and their fight for public education by donating to Tacos for Teachers, the fund that brings taco trucks to the picket-lines,”
The service started on Monday, the same day that the strike did. The LA Times reported that many of these street vendors sold outside of several LA schools, including: the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Downtown LA, with additional stops planned for schools in El Sereno, Boyle Heights, Venice and North Hollywood
On Tuesday, a Twitter post shared by the Democratic Socialists for America (DSA) confirmed that the Tacos for Teachers campaign had also partnered with the Los Angeles Street Vendor campaign. They posted the following:
The Tacos for Teachers GoFundMe further explains that any funds raised that are “not used on tacos” will be donated directly to the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, a group aiming to stem the privatization of schools, and to secure funding for more community-based schools.
This is the most L.A. thing ever. Everyone has each other's backs. What are your thoughts and comments? Tell us what you think!
