LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Police fatally shot a suspect who apparently bailed out of a vehicle and ran across the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in the City Terrace area Friday, prompting a full closure of the highway and causing extensive backups in both directions.

The shooting occurred late Friday morning on the 10 Freeway just east of the Long Beach (710) Freeway. The California Highway Patrol initially announced that all eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed at Eastern Avenue, but the westbound side of the heavily traveled freeway was also shut down to accommodate the investigation.

Video from the scene showed a trio of Monterey Park Police Department vehicles parked on the freeway behind a white BMW with the driver's side door open, and a body was seen covered with a sheet on a nearby freeway ramp. A gun could be seen on the ground near the body.

According to reports from the scene, the allegedly armed suspect bailed out of the BMW and ran across the freeway, leading to a shooting involving police on the nearby ramp.

The exact circumstances of the shooting and the apparent pursuit that preceded it were unclear.

It was also unclear how long the freeway might remain closed.
