Hart Community Homes created Monkey Business Café in 2004 to help educate and empower young people who are in the foster care system.
"The foster system is really broken in the sense that kids are on their own by the time they're 18. We want them to walk away with a resume, with work experience, with social skills because they've interacted with others and the public," said Hart board member, Rebecka Forrester. Monkey Business Café staff has about 60% of kids who are either currently in the foster care system or they used to be in the foster care system.
The Hart Community Homes also helps kids to find a place to live once they turn 18. Monkey Business Café also collaborates with U-ACRE and Cal State Fullerton to give kids who are in the program an opportunity to do more than just build a resume and find housing. Kids in the program will be able to learn about sustainable agriculture to help the restaurant be successful with their food. Go to ABC 7 for more.
