As high temperatures continue to soar across California, the California power grid manager has announced an extension of the statewide "Flex Alert" for yet another day. Many inland areas of the state are experiencing temperatures soaring above 100 degrees which are expected to persist throughout the long Labor Day holiday weekend. This heat wave is notable in that these are the highest temperatures of the year so far and will test California's power system.
Additionally, Governor Newsom has declared a state of emergency to increase power production and is calling on Californians to reduce power consumption.
During a Flex Alert, people are advised to set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using major appliances during the day and turn off any unused lights.
Both California businesses and residents are urged to cut back on their power usage in order to avoid causing a strain on the system while high temperatures persist. Currently, rolling blackouts are not in effect, however that remains a possibility.
The California Independent System Operator also said that it is possible that there will be Flex Alerts over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
These tips are also offered:
- Pre-cool your homes before 4 p.m. and then set the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher from 4 to 9 p.m., if health permits.
- Defer use of major appliances from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Run your dishwasher and washing machine earlier or later.
- Turn off all unnecessary lights from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Cook your meals earlier in the day to save energy and keep your home cooler.
- Avoid charging EVs from 4-9 p.m., if possible. Instead, charge them before 4 p.m. when solar production is abundant and electricity prices are likely lower.
