The June 7 Primary Election is rapidly approaching. Here's what you need to know about what to expect on your ballot.

The importance of a primary election is that it will give voters a chance to choose who will run in the General Election which takes place in November.

The difference between Primary Elections and other elections is that a voter’s party affiliation must be declared at the time of the vote. A voter's registration must be included on election registers, eligibility slips, absentee ballot requests and absentee ballot affidavits.

The 2022 primary Election ballot will include candidates for U.S. Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, Member of State Board of Equalization, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, U.S. Representative in Congress, State Senator, State Assembly Member, as well as other local candidates.

Of those candidates, Governor Gavin Newsom is seeking nomination against over twenty other candidates. A majority of his opponents fall in the Republican Party while a few also fall into the Green Party or have no preference of party.

Governor Newsom overwhelmingly beat a recall election last year. If nominated in the primary, he will be up for re-election for his second and final term as California's governor.

The candidates for governor range from those who work as writer/poet to business owners, farmers, retired educators, and more.

The list of candidates for lieutenant governor are much shorter, but also see a wide array of candidate types. Current Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis will be opposed by those who currently serve as businessmen, attorneys, engineers, mental health workers and more.

California's current Secretary of State, Shirley N. Weber, will run against a majority of Republicans, but also members of the Green Party and a candidate with no party preference.

County races include a very contentious sheriff’s contest with eight challengers trying to unseat L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
