The Lyrid meteor shower peaks Thursday night ahead of Earth Day on Friday.

According to experts, the best time to see the Lyrid meteor shower is early in the morning in Southern California.

The name Lyrid is derived from the constellation Lyra, according to NASA.

Also known as the Lyrids, they are known to peak in late April and are one of the oldest known meteor showers to exist. The Lyrids date back to approximately 2,700 years.

Known for their bright and fast meteors, the Lyrids can surprise viewers with as many as 100 meteors per hour. However, in general up to 20 meteors are seen per hour during the meteor shower.

Experts from NASA add that one should be patient as it can take up to 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark skies and before you begin to notice the meteors.

To see the Lyrids, it's best to head out to a location with a dark sky after sunset in Southern California.

According to NASA, one should face east when looking towards the sky to get the best view of the Lyrids. While the Lyrids will happen during the nighttime, they are also likely to be seen closer to dawn.
