7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Los Angeles Region

Seismograph

UPDATE: The magnitude of the 8:19 PM PT earthquake has been recategorized back to a 7.1 from 6.9.

Southern California continues to feel the shaken effects of earthquakes over the holiday weekend, with the United States Geological Survey confirming that a 7.1 magnitude quake hit late this evening at approximately 8:19 PM local time.

This comes a day after July 4th's 6.4 magnitude quake, which according to the LA Times was the largest earthquake in two decades reported in the SoCal region. Today's tectonic event reportedly occurred about 31 miles from California City, 62 miles from Barstow, and 64 miles from Rosamond, CA.

The Los Angeles Fire Department will be maintaining all relevant communications about earthquake news updates on their twitter account @LAFD and issued a reminder to drop, cover and hold on when shaking starts in your home or location.
