According to ABC 7, the Los Angeles County has received over $18 million in grants from the state to purchase and turn a hotel and two motels into interim housing for those experiencing homelessness.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the news on Wednesday and has said they received $5.5 million to purchase a 20-unit hotel in which they will turn it into interim housing with supportive services for homeless families. He also said that they received $12.9 million for the Sierra Highway Hotel project that will be converting two adjacent motels located in Lancaster into interim housing as well. Those two motels will help provide 39 units and supportive services for the homeless.
The motels needs to be rehabilitated first but Newsom hopes to welcome residents within eight months from getting the funding. These grants are part of a project called Project Homekey which is a state program that will create permanent housing in apartment buildings and hotels for people who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless.
