A Costa Mesa Motel 6 Is Being Transformed Into Affordable Housing This Fall

The Home Key Project and nonprofit Mercy House have teamed up with the County of Orange to transform a former Motel 6 in Costa Mesa to affordable housing by this fall.

"It's great that I live in a city that supports the type of work we do and finds the real important need to try to get people off the streets and also prevent people for going on the streets," said Kyle Paine, the president of Community Development Partner, which is the lead developer behind the project.

The affordable housing will be long-term and would house at least 87 people. Paine has said that 30 of those units will be going to homeless veterans and another 10 will be for people at-risk of becoming homeless or who are under the Mental Health Service Act. The project is expected to be done by October 2023 and rent will be up to $711. Rent will also be income-based so in some cases people could qualify to live there for free.
