LA Just Got Their First-Ever Vegan Butcher Shop In Highland Park!

Calling all vegans...or meat eaters too. Maciel Bañales Luna is opening up Los Angeles's first-ever vegan butcher shop right in Highland Park on Friday, July 8th. The 1,000 square-foot butcher shop is located on the corner of York Blvd. and Aldama St. and customers can either choose to takeout or hangout inside the store to catch a bite. The shop will also sell premade charcuterie kits for those weekend picnics or get-togethers. The store will be open from 10am-3pm on Tuesday through Sunday.

Maciel’s Plant-Based Butcher & Deli brings together Mexican influences with classic deli touches, representing a culmination of Bañales Luna’s lifelong dedication to health, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.

Maciel's menu will be influenced by Luna's cultural heritage and educational background. The cold cuts will be made from ingredients you know such as chickpeas, vegetables, seitan, tofu, spice, and brines. The butcher shop will be carrying scratch-made turkey, bacon, pastrami, salami, chicharrones, and chorizo, which will be legume-based and will be high in protein, vitamins, and fiber. The cheeses offered at the shop will be cashew-based camembert, nacho and jalapeno cheddar.

“We focus on four things when making the meats: the taste — that is the most important thing, of course, the look, the texture, and the health,” she says.

Some of the items you can expect to see from their deli section include a breakfast sandwich, a Reuben, the Flores (Luna's personal favorite), potato salad, cucumber salad, aguas frescas, jarred salsas and...of course dessert! Head over to LA Eater for more information on Maciel's.
