TurboTax Must Pay Deceived Customers $141M Due To Promise of Free Services

According to KTLA 5, TurboTax must pay $141 million to customers across the United States for misleading them about their free tax-filing services.

The company behind the tax-filing program, Intuit Inc., will be suspending the "free, free, free" ad campaign of TurboTax and will also pay restitution to about 4.4 million taxpayers. This investigation was brought on by a 2019 ProPublica report that noticed the company misleading low-income tax filers to use their services instead of the federally supported free services that they could've gotten.

Intuit will be providing restitution to those who used TurboTax Free Edition from 2016 through 2018. If you are one of those customers, you will be receiving notices by mail and a direct payment of about $30 for each year for using the services.
