This week EJ talked to the CEO of Union Station Homeless Services, Anne Miskey. Union Station is an agency that works to end homelessness for individuals and families. They also advocate for societal and political changes that need to happen to end homelessness for good. Union Station serves San Gabriel Valley and part of North Los Angeles.
Homelessness is not a result of peoples bad choices. It is a result of systems that have failed people, especially our most vulnerable in our society. Anne emphasizes that this is the most important part of understanding the homeless issue.
Union Station had outreach teams that go out wherever homeless people are. They build trust and a relationship with these people in order to help them. Often times homeless people are weary of people coming to help them because of how they have been failed my the system and people before.
