Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj & More Speak Out On #ENDSARS Protests

Following eyewitness reports that claimed several #EndSARS protestors were shot dead by Nigerian security forces in Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday (October 21), celebrities took to social media to call out the Nigerian government's treatment of people taking part in protests against police brutality in the West African country.

“I am heartbroken to see the senseless brutality taking place in Nigeria,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram Tuesday evening. “There has to be an end to SARS.”

“We have been working on partnerships with youth organizations to support those protesting for change,” she continued. “We are collaborating with coalitions to provide emergency healthcare, food and shelter. To our Nigerian sisters and brothers, we stand by you.”

Protests began earlier this month after calls for the disbandment of the police unit known as the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) following the surfacing of a video that showed officers allegedly killing a man. In addition to alleged police brutality, #ENDSARS protestors claim the police unit has a long history of corruption, which includes kidnapping, harassment, and extortion.

While Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari announced that SARS will be disbanded last week, protests against police brutality have continued in recent days.
