The First Trailer For 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Just Dropped

The first trailer for the upcoming Ghostbusters revival film is finally here. Known only as Ghostbusters 2020 while in production, the title has been revealed as Ghostbusters: Afterlife. While an all-female reboot of the beloved series came out in 2016, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be a direct follow up to the original movies.

Even though Afterlife is a sequel to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, the story has been moved from New York City to a small town in Oklahoma. None of the original players appear in the trailer, which focuses on a new generation of Ghostbusters instead.

According to Vanity Fair, the fourth Ghostbusters film will follow a mom named Callie, played by Carrie Coon, and her two children Phoebe and Trevor, played by Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard respectively, as they move to a small town in Oklahoma after inheriting property from Callie’s father. The catch, though, is that Callie never knew her father and she doesn't know anything about this mystery property or the town.

“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” the director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife Jason Reitman - whose father, Ivan Reitman, directed the original Ghostbusters films - revealed to Vanity Fair. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

Many fans suspect, of course, that Phoebe and Trevor's grandfather will be one of the original Ghostbusters. The running theory is that Egon Spangler, played by the late Harold Ramis, is their long lost benefactor. Not only does Phoebe's look in the film resemble that of the original Ghostbuster, there's also a shot in the trailer where she discovers a beige jumpsuit with Spengler stitched on to it.

While Ramis passed away in 2014, many of the other original cast members, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts are slated to appear in the film. Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens in theaters July 10, 2020. Are you excited for the latest installment?
