Shawn Mendes' Advice on Starting a Music Career at KIIS Jingle Ball

Since the release of his 2015 hit single Stitches, Shawn Mendes has become no stranger rising in the pop charts. Shawn stopped by the Mercedes-Benz Interview Lounge at KIIS FM's 2018 Jingle Ball Presented By Capital One to talk about how smart his fans are and why he wants to be authentic for them.

Fresh off of Dallas' Jingle Ball, Shawn reminisced with JoJo Wright, Jesse Lozano, and Sisanie about his first time at The Forum playing the acoustic guitar with Justin Timberlake. He said that it was the best overwhelming feeling of nostalgia. “It was all starting for me,” Shawn said.

Since his first time at The Forum, Shawn has put out three number one albums, but his journey to number one started out by watching YouTube videos. Jesse Lozano says that when he talks with high school kids who want to start a music career, he points out to them that Shawn Mendes learned how to play music from YouTube.

Shawn encourages those who want to learn how to play guitar to “spend six months doing it, and you will be doing it in six months.” In fact, he says that with anything one wants to learn. JoJo quickly asked if he can teach his wife from YouTube to NOT make him take out the trash, to which Shawn replied, “that’s never going to change no matter how much technology happens.” Sorry JoJo.

When asked what he will be doing for the holidays, he responded, “I’m really looking forward to spending time with my sister.” Even though she is fifteen, he feels that they have such an awesome connection and now always wants to hang out with her. His parents must love that!
