This Pasadena Restaurant Has A Robot Flipping Burgers

Attention all cooks, hold on to your jobs — CaliBurger in Pasadena has just upped the standards for who is qualified to be in the kitchen. Flippy the robotic kitchen assistant has just started a job flipping burgers!

According to NPR, Flippy has been practicing for months and it's finally its time to shine.

Flippy can tell when the burger has been perfectly cooked and even alerts you when it's time to add the cheese on top. It can even grill 150 burgers per hour!

So how exactly does Flippy monitor all this? TechCrunch says, "it takes in data from thermal sensors, 3D sensors and different cameras onboard to perceive its environment." That's one high-tech cook.

Flippy even uses artificial intelligence to strengthen its burger-flipping skills. The more it practices, the better it will get at the task. This is different than any other robot cook that has been created before because Flippy will be able to continue learning as new menus come into play.

Some people are worried that the invention of a robot like this could leave humans out of jobs in the kitchen. David Zito, co-founder and chief executive officer of Miso Robotics, assures them that this is not the case.

He said, “our mission is to improve working conditions of chefs and line cooks with assistants, not replace them. Anyone who’s ever worked in a restaurant knows how hard the work is and the value of extra hands and that’s exactly what we built.”

A statement from Miso Robotics claims that Flippy can even clean spatulas and wipe down the surface of the grill. Overall, Flippy is there just to give a helping hand without needing to be paid like a regular employee!

If you're a restaurant owner and want your own "Flippy," be prepared to drop some cash. USA Today reports that getting your own Flippy costs anywhere from $60,000 to $100,000 depending on if you want the oven-cleaning feature.

It sounds like Flippy is going to be a lot of help in this Pasadena restaurant! CaliBurger has even confirmed that they will be bringing Flippy to 50 other locations nationwide. This could be the future of cooks everywhere!
