Kate Winslet Details Challenges of Filming ‘The Mountain Between Us'

Kate Winslet’s latest role was a challenging one. The Oscar-winning actress stars alongside Idris Elba in survival film The Mountain Between Us and Kate shared with On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday, September 27, that filming conditions were no joke.

In the film, Kate plays a photographer named Alex Martin whose chartered prop plane crashes in a snowy mountain range. Without cell phone service or any signs of human life, Kate and Idris’ character, doctor Ben Bass, must assist each other in their fight to stay alive.

“It does keep you pretty suspended,” Kate said when she called in on Wednesday, September 27. “I loved the script when I first read it. It’s very much a story about trusting a stranger and … a story of survival and having to communicate in order to survive.”

Kate and Idris filmed in Utah in freezing conditions at 10,000 feet high and in minus 38 degree weather and according to the actress, it was fun, but more than challenging.

“The cold was a shock and the altitude was a shock as well,” Kate said. “It takes so much energy just to breathe … the oxygen is so much thinner up there. It affected our speech for sure … and it made a difference — your face freezes, you don’t take your gloves off because you know your hands are going to feel so cold and peeing is rather challenging. I tried very hard not to pee, to be honest.”

Kate added that although “there were lots of scenes that were difficult to film,” she was thankful to have her costar.

“I was very lucky to have such a good partner in Idris,” she gushed. “He was just great.”

Catch The Mountain Between Us in theaters October 6.
