Kelly Clarkson Explains Why She Isn’t Returning to ‘American Idol’

Kelly Clarkson stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Thursday, September 14, and revealed why she isn’t returning to the American Idol reboot.

The singer — who just dropped new track “Love So Soft” off her upcoming eighth studio album, Meaning of Life — rose to fame after competing on the hit competition show during its inaugural season in 2002.

“I know I’m bummed because then you went back to Idol and I didn’t even know Idol was coming back,” Kelly told Ryan while talking about her upcoming gig on NBC’s The Voice, which is why she can’t join the Idol reboot.

“In my defense, I was pregnant with Remi and they kept saying they were going to bring it back and I thought maybe like in five or 10 years and by the time I heard abut it … I was already talking to The Voice,” Clarkson explained, adding that she’s been in talks to do The Voice for awhile now.

Kelly added that working on The Voice will also keep her family in one spot considering her husband, Brandon Blackstock, who manages her, also manages Blake Shelton.

“It’s going to be really nice to be in one place with my husband [and] my kids,” Kelly explained.
