Rap femcee Iggy Azalea has been laying low the past year following a string of social media spats, a botched 2015 tour and a wave of negative criticism from other hip-hop artists. After a brief "psychotic breakdown" and spending some time off to reflect on the backlash, Azalea is now on a mission to rehabilitate her image and career, starting with the release of her new single "Team."
The club-ready track, heavily-produced with brash beats and shout-outs to Kylie Jenner and hip-hop legend Juvenile, is unlike Azalea's well-known bangers like "Fancy," "Black Widow," and "Pretty Girls" for one obvious reason: There is no featured artist on the track. During her in-studio interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest Friday, the raptress admitted that "Team" is a special song because it is 100 percent her.
"I went a little feature crazy last year, which was cool," she said. "It really enjoyed that, but it was good to get back to doing a song where I only had to consider myself when creating, which was good because I could do totally everything the way I want it."
"Team" is the first song lifted from her upcoming second studio album Digital Distortion, which is expected to drop sometime this summer. Contrary to her failed 2015 The Great Escape Tour in support of her 2014 album The New Classic, Azalea is wasting no time to take Digital Distortion on a promotional trek at the end of the year.
"I felt like last time, I just got to a point where I was burnt out on the music by the time I got around to touring because my album had been out for over a year." she said. "I don't want to have a risk of that happening again. So I think, given that my album comes out in June, it would be really nice to tour August, September, October and have the music be fresh and have me still be in love with it, performing it and everyone having a good time."
Azalea, who had to push back her wedding with Lakers star Nick Young to go back to work, is well aware of the long promotional road she has ahead of her, but there is one thing she knows for certain that's keeping her in the right mindset.
"It's nice to have a job again," she laughed.
