Vegetarians have less body fat than meat eaters even when they consume the same number of calories.

A new study from Loma Linda University is the result of a long-term investigation of disease rates among Seventh-Day Adventists in the US and Canada.

It finds that vegetarian Adventists have a lower risk of heart disease, some types of cancers, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Vegetarian Adventists also have a healthier BMI, or body mass index. Almost 67 percent of the vegans in the study had a BMI under 25, compared to 29 percent of the meat eaters.
