HAWAIIAN GARDENS (CNS) - A man suspected of pumping six shots into the mother of his two children in Riverside County was taken into custody today, eight hours after he led deputies on a chase and then barricaded himself in a vehicle in a Hawaiian Gardens supermarket parking lot.

The incident began in Eastvale, around four miles north of Corona in western Riverside County, around 12:30 a.m., when deputies got a report of an assault with a deadly weapon near Rolling Meadow and Burrage streets, said Deputy Armando Munoz of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Munoz said deputies did not find a victim or suspect there, but soon heard that a man had taken a woman with six gunshot wounds to a nearby hospital.

The deputy said that the woman was out of surgery and was expected to survive. She had reportedly been shot with a small-caliber handgun.

``It appears to be a domestic violence incident,'' Munoz said.

The children were not at the location of the reported shooting.

It was later determined that the man and woman have two children. Their relationship status was not immediately known.

Munoz said the suspect left the hospital in a white Dodge, but there was no description of the model type.

Deputies from the Los Angeles County sheriff's Lakewood Station located the suspect, who refused to surrender after a vehicle pursuit ended in a Food 4 Less parking lot at the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Carson Street at 6:59 a.m., according to Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

A team from the sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau and crisis negotiators were called in and the man surrendered without further incident just before 3 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.

The standoff closed Carson Street between Juan Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard. Also, Norwalk Boulevard was closed between 216th Street and 223rd Street, deputies said.

Traffic reporters said the standoff interfered with people trying to attend the City of Hawaiian Garden's 50th Anniversary Parade.
