SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A large hillside brush fire south of State Route 78  prompted evacuations today in surrounding residential areas and at nearby  California State University San Marcos.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons in the area of Cocos Drive about  3:45 p.m., sheriff's Lt. Dave Brown said.

Campus administrators cleared everyone off the university campus, and  deputies evacuated residents from the Coronado Hills, Discovery Hills,  Discovery Meadows and North San Elijo Hills developments, authorities reported.

An acreage total for the blaze was unavailable in the late afternoon.
